Honeycombs Inspire Safety Designs

Honeycombs Inspire Safety Designs Honeycombs Inspire Safety Designs Honeycombs Inspire Safety DesignsWhen you think of designs that assist safety, honeycombs might not immediately come to mind. But they have been utilized for years and Carolyn Conner Seepersad, associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin, believes the negative stiffness honeycombs her team is working on could increase the safety of a wide variety of products, from automobiles to helmets.Think a honeycomb cant stand up to high speeds? Seepersad says a honeycomb the size of a human hand can stop a 100-mph fastball. With the honeycombs that are made out of plastic, the problem is bouncing back after impact but, with what were working on with negative stiffness, it can withstand impact many times, she says. But what is negative stiffness? Prof. Michael Haberman, member of the team and research scientist at the school, says one example to think of would be if you pushed on a spring an d it actually assisted your pushing instead of the reverse.Conventional honeycomb structure (left) vs new NS honeycomb (right). ansehen The University of Texas at AustinFor the honeycomb, it bounces back through the cell geometry they devised, Seepersad says.A honeycomb structure like the one we have gets lots of energy absorption typically youll buckle the cell walls, Haberman says. We do it elastically, while the aluminum ones do it plastically instead. They end up damaged when load is applied. For us, its done elastically and they absorb energy and can bounce back to the original configuration. This can be isolated in a personal protection helmet, for example. What will happen is once you have an impact with the outside of the helmet, you start to absorb energy at what we call a forced threshold, Seepersad says. This means whatever is underneath it can isolate at a constant rate of G level, she explains. The honeycombs buckle at a particular load. When you can predict it, you can design it for a particular G level. As far as the testing, Haberman says they started by doing vibration transmissionability tests, getting the idea of how negative stiffness would respond to vibration. Those transmission cases were measured, for example, by putting it on a shaker or vibration table and measuring aspects such as input acceleration and output acceleration. They also did drop tests. This was where they put the honeycomb structures on a base and drop a mass on top of them. They used accelerometers to measure mass as it was falling onto the honeycomb. But that still leaves mora testing to be done, and the team wants to move into creating dimensions to absorb different types of impact from a different direction. Still, the design has many potential applications, even auto racing, and that can require more modifications.Seepersad says the honeycomb type structure is in everything from tree trunks to the interior part of human bone. In the end, she believes this work may help us appreciate nature inspiring science to help save lives.Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion With the honeycombs that are made out of plastic, the problem is bouncing back after impact but, with negative stiffness, it can withstand impact many times.Prof. Carolyn Conner-Seepersad, University of Texas at Austin

How to Bounce Back from 3 Common Job Interview Blunders

How to Bounce Back from 3 Common Job Interview BlundersHow to Bounce Back from 3 Common Job Interview BlundersMistakes are a part of life, so dont beat yourself up if you happen to make one during a job bewerbungsinterview. Instead, quickly turn your energy toward rectifying the situation youll show the prospective employer that youre a competent problem-solver who knows how to make the best out of a bad situation.Heres a look at three common job interview blunders and how to bounce back from them1. Youre going to be late. You forgot to set your alarm clock or underestimated how long it would take to drive to the interview site, and now theres no way youll make it in at the scheduled time. Do you still have a shot at the job?Yes. While such a scenario doesnt get the relationship off on the best note, call to apologize and give the interviewer a heads-up. Youll show respect for the rolles time and demonstrate that you own up to mistakes. Ask if it is still okay to come in today or if y ou might have a second chance on another day. And then get there2. Nerves are getting the better of you.Youre having trouble focusing or the answers coming out of your mouth arent the ones you practiced, and now youre worried that the interviewer has a bad impression (which makes your palms sweat even more). How can you right the ship?Take a few breaths to center yourself and shake off the interview jitters, rather than worry about what youve already said or done. Time still exists for you to shine. And if you find yourself rambling- a common occurrence when nervous- heed this advice from Michelle Petrazzuolo, senior HR professional at Petrazzuolo HR. Take a pause. Its perfectly okay to stop and say, Let me think for a moment I want to give you a thoughtful answer to this. That gives you a couple of beats to collect yourself and try again.3. Youre underprepared.A series of disruptions kept you from completing much research on the company. Or you left your list of questions on the din ing room table. How can you still come off as a competent, interested candidate?Valerie Streif, senior advisor for Mentat, says its crucial to still try to make the interview an exchange rather than an interrogation. Ask general questions like Whats your favorite part about working for this company? or What do the next five years of growth goals look like for the company? as a way to save yourself and gather more information about the role. And then follow up with an exceptional thank-you note, even if you dont feel the interview went very well. Sales Manager Finds a Job Close to Home

Sales Manager Finds a Job Close to HomeSales Manager Finds a Job Close to HomeDonald Wroble welchesnt ready to uproot his family from Atlanta. So he turned to Ladders to find his third job through the site.Donald Wroble has had a lot of practice selling himself the past several years. Thats why, when the SalesLadder member started looking for a new job in January, he was ready to attack the job search with confidence.I would say, as a professional marketer, the best thing you can do for yourself is to stay on top of what is happening in your field, and find out what unique skills you can market, he said. That way, youre ready when you have to find a new job.In 2005, Wroble had left his position as a sales manager for BASF, a weltumspannend chemical company, when the company went through a number of restructurings. In the next four years, he worked for two other companies that also went through reorganizations, each time finding aleidher position through Ladders.By January 2008, he ha d landed at GE Energy, in a marketing role, working to get the company into the chemical industry. In January 2009, GE Energy was changing gears. The company asked him to relocate to Houston. It was not an ideal time for him to move his family, so it was time once again to use Ladders. There was no way I was going to relocate my family, he said. I had one kid in high school and another in middle school, and houses were not selling. I wanted to stay in Atlanta. So I started looking for another job.An interim stay in HoustonStill, he continued working for his employer, living in Houston while his family stayed in Atlanta. He devoted his off-hours to looking for a job. It was a good four-month search, he said. I did the normal networking that everyone recommends, but in a down market, that wasnt as fruitful as it might have been. And, while he wanted to stay in Atlanta, there were a few other cities he considered, including Louisville, Ky., and Chicago. I didnt want to limit my opportuni ties, he said. But I knew my kids didnt want to move. So we picked just a few cities where we wouldnt mind being. One of the features Wroble said he likes best about Ladders is the fact that he can search keywords specific to the type of job he is looking for and the geographical area he would like to be in, and that Ladders will send him alerts when those jobs appear. In his case, director jobs in sales in Atlanta. Its a great matching service, he said. The fact that he was working full time while conducting his search made it all much easier for him. The best thing is I could be traveling anywhere in the world but could still check on my job hunt, he said. It was key for me to be able to spend at least 30 minutes to an hour every day on it. Youve got to stay focused on your search.Wroble said he sent hundreds of resumes during his six-month search before he found his perfect job.I saw a job listed on Ladders that I knew was the perfect job. I knew the company, it was well respected in the chemical industry, and they were looking for a global sales director, something I had learned in previous jobs. It involved customer service and tech service. And, theres room to grow. And, best of all, it was based in Atlanta.Wroble sent his resume, and the company, PolyOne, the worlds largest compounder and distributor of plastics, responded immediately. After a phone conversation with the hiring manager, they set up an in-person meeting for the following week, when he would be home visiting his family. Even though he got off the airplane with a case of laryngitis from allergies, he was able to make enough of an impression on the folks at PolyOne that a few weeks later his eventual boss flew to Houston to meet with him. One more meeting in Atlanta with more PolyOne executives, and he was offered the job.He started in mid-July as the global director of sales, in the specialty-ink division. Why you should watch the job market while youre employedWroble said he believes that bei ng in the job market so much over the past several years may have been stressful, but it was also good preparation for this position. I was at BASF for 20 years, and I had a good job, so I never looked outside to see what was happening in the marketplace. I didnt know my value in the market. But once things changed there, and I had to go outside, I learned a lot from researching other companies, interviewing and working other places. And I was able to better assess my value Ive been able to almost double my salary since working at BASF.Wroble suggested that people, whether they feel the need to change jobs or not, should go out into the market every year or so, just to see what is available. That way you can stay in practice, so when you do need a job, youve got the skills down.As for himself, Wroble said hes had enough practice for a while. There is a lot of great opportunity with this job, and I am hoping to stay put for a while, he said. The thought that we might have to move put a lot of stress on our family. Id certainly like to stick around and let the kids schliff school here.

Spa Manager Exercises Her Options

Spa Manager Exercises Her OptionsSpa Manager Exercises Her OptionsCharisse transparent found her dream job at a brand new Lasik spa but it welchesnt opening for another year. Undeterred, she moved to her parents home to be closer to the spas headquarters and win the job.Moving back in with yur parents after youve lost a job might signal defeat for some people. For 36-year-old Charisse Banner, it welches a sign that shed won over her new employer as she staked out a job that she knew welches a perfect fit.The OpsLadder member had been manager of a spa in Northern California last December when the chain decided to close all its California locations. Banner, who loved working in the spa industry and the region, welches determined to find another job in her industry and stay in the San Francisco Bay area. So she did what most Northern Californians do when they are looking for a job.I went to Craigslist, she said. Anyone who lives in San Francisco does that. But the listings service, whi ch advertises everything from free couches to tech services, didnt really deliver the personal touch that she was hoping for.I did end up finding a few jobs that interested me, but when I got a call back, I felt the people who were doing the preliminary interviews were very rushed I didnt feel I could get across who I was, Banner said. One reason Im in the spa business is I like accommodating people and giving great service. I know they were trying to weed through 500 applicants. But there was no personal connection. After about a month of searching through Craigslist, Banner started looking for other sites and signed up for Ladders. What I loved about Ladders is that they would send you an e-mail, matching jobs with what you were looking for, she said. Its almost like a dating site. They do the work, they tell you whats right for you. Youre not looking through pages and pages of stuff that isnt right for you.Banner said the job postings that she received were jobs she was interested, but nothing was located in the Bay area.Determined to stay put, she didnt apply to any of them. Still, those kept her spirits up as she entered the second month of unemployment. There were a lot of great jobs, just not in the area where I wanted to live, she said. But it kept my hope alive. I saw there were good jobs out there, and I saw that Ladders knew the kind of job that I wanted. The perfect jobIn February, Banner saw a job on Ladders that she knew was the perfect job for her. Except for one thing. The job was based in Los Angeles, she said. But I looked at it, and I rewrote my cover letter, because I was willing to make some changes for this perfect job. I spent a few hours rewriting my cover letter. Then, when I went back to the site to actually apply for the job, the location of the job had changed to San Francisco. What Banner later found out was that the company, which had spas in other locations, was looking to expand. It had determined that the Los Angeles area was satur ated and decided to move the spa to the Bay area. The position, a center director for a new location that was being built, required someone who could also talk about site selection and help with construction and build-out decisions. Banner, who had worked in condominium sales before coming to the spa industry, felt she was the perfect candidate for the job.Who would have thought that spa and real estate would go together? she said. I couldnt have been more excited, and I think one of the reasons they responded to me was because I was able to express that excitement in my cover letter. Two hours after sending her resume, Banner received a call from the founder of the company, a doctor who owned several Lasik eye centers with medical spas attached. Banner spoke to him for over an hour she learned that he was based in south Florida, where she had gone to college and her parents now live, and shared her interest in his project. It was a real personal connection he was interested in heari ng about me, and I think he was happy to talk to someone who was as excited about his project as he was.It was early February, and because the job had just been listed, the doctor was cautious as he moved ahead. He mentioned hed be in San Francisco in April and suggested they set up a meeting. Banner had another idea. I bought a plane ticket to visit my parents and suggested we get together and talk while I was in Florida, she said.In early March, she met with him as well as the companys national manager. At the conclusion of those meetings, she felt even more sure the job could be hers. But the company was still moving slowly. Like any new project, deadlines kept changing, and they didnt expect to need anyone in the position until at least June. And I was thinking, what would I do until June? she said.A new moveDisappointed but still determined, she made sure they had plans to meet when the doctor came to San Francisco in April. At that meeting, said Banner, as they discussed plans for the spa, I asked him something about the business, and he said, Thats not my job, thats your job. It was sounding more and more like it was my job. At the end of our two-hour conversation, when he asked me if I could recommend someone to help in the call center in Florida, I said, Why dont I just come and do it? If you can assure me that the director job is mine, this would give me an opportunity to learn about the business and get to know the national director. It would be a good way to know one another. He agreed. Banner put her belongings in storage, gave up her San Francisco apartment and moved in with her parents. She is now the center director for the Viso Lasik Medspa, which will open in San Jose in January. She expects to be in Florida until at least the end of October and will then head back to the Bay area to supervise the opening of the spa, which is planned for January. In on the ground floorDespite the long wait and the moves, Banner is very happy with the way things have gone. Its an opportunity for this to be my baby from the beginning. How often do you get the opportunity to be with something from the get-go? Ill be selecting the staff on the spa side and working to set up the spa.Banner said she felt that this job was perfect for her, so she said convincing the owners of the spa that she was the right person was not so much a sales pitch as convincing them of the truth. You have to have the confidence that this is the right job for you. If you do, then you shouldnt be afraid to put yourself in front of the people you need to.As for living with her parents, she said, Most people move back in with their parents because they dont have a job. I was lucky enough to have them to move in with to help me get this job. Besides, she adds, They are snowbirds, so they are gone during the summer. So Im basically on my own here.

Meditation for people who hate meditation

Meditation for people who hate meditationMeditation for people who hate meditationIve seen them on Instagram. The neutral color-wearing wellness influencers who must gracefully balance their iPhones against some cosmically-charged crystal to record their morning meditation ritual. There they sit, perfectly poised on a little cushion resembling a pom-pom, eyes closed as they breathe through a 15-second time-lapse video that probably took 10+ minutes to film. Meanwhile, there I am on the other side of the screen, unable to sit and hold my attention on one thing for even those 15 seconds. Imboredalready.Hear me out Irealizethat meditation and mindfulness has its benefits. Sharper focus, reduced stress, and activating your inner chi and whatnot. Sounds peachy. But Im someone who couldnt sit through a movie as a child (much to my parents dismay), and hardly can todayBut for my fellow hyper-active, somewhat-perfectionistic, stress-inclined achievers, our mindsdodesperately need a break. De spite my best attempts at becoming one of those people who can sit and meditate for minutes each morning, Im aHeadspacedropout (but I still recommend their excellent app). For me, the key welches finding a more stimulating way to reap the rewards of meditation. My meditative practices need to involvemovement.Meditation with movementTurns out, Im not alone. Active meditation, also known as dynamic meditation, welches popularized in the 1970s by an Indian mystic named Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, later known as Osho. He believed that our modern, super-stimulating world called for a meditation style that involved more physical activity. And he came to that conclusionbeforethe invention of the InternetSo if like me, youre someone who hates meditation, but still wants to reap the stress-busting, mind-clearing benefits, give these 5 tactics a try and let me know how they work out for you.1. Walking meditationThis is my go-to, since I start most of my days walking TeddyTheDog in our neighborhoo d park or (when Im short on time) around our city block. In order to make my time with Ted more of ameditativewalk, I leave my phone at home. Its okay. You can go for a walk without your phone and the world wont end, I promise. Then, I try to focus on what Im seeing, hearing, and sensing throughout the course of our stroll. Instead of thinking about everything on my TO DO list for the day, I try instead to keep my mind in the present moment, noticing the parteicular shade of blue in the morning sky, the smell of fresh cut grass, and all the elements of my surroundings for which Im especially grateful that day. And while I can neither confirm nor deny this rumor, some might even say that I talk to Teddy about my observations as we go2. Morning pagesDo you wake up each day with racing thoughts? Can you hardly get through breakfast without an anxiety-inducing laundry list forming in your mind? Julia Cameron, author ofThe Artists Way,popularized this written form of meditation that many of my fellow creatives love. The first rule of morning pages is that theres no wrong way to do morning pages. The premise is simple every morning, start the day by writing three notebook pages of total stream-of-consciousness musings. Thats it Whatever comes out of your pen or pencil is just fine. The writing doesnt serve any purpose, it doesnt have to be perfect, and hell, it doesnt even need to make sense Its just your opportunity to mentally clear the decks for your brand-new day.For full disclosure, writing is the absolutelastthing I feel like doing in the morning, so I havent practiced this form of active meditation myself. Ive always been night owl journaler, personally. But Ive heard from many of my creative friends writers, coaches, and entrepreneurs alike that this is a sanity-saving practice they adore.3. YogaI love yoga for its fitness benefits, but even more for the mental calm it brings me. Thats part of the reason I did yoga three times a week in the final few weeks l eading up tomy wedding dayYoga is all about aligning your body movements with your breathing, which feels very similar to meditation to me. Many seated meditation fans focus on their breathe as an anchor point to quiet their mind and prevent other thoughts from floating their way in. Meditative yoga is just like that, plus body movements that promote strength and flexibility on top of it all. While notallyoga is meditative, yoga that calms your mind as well as challenges your body is my favorite form of exercise. Its not about perfection or performance for others, its all about relaxing into poses that also stretch your comfort zone (both mentally and physically).4. Running meditationSimilar to walking meditation, running can be so much more than a physical activity alone. To reap the rewards of meditation through running, I focus my run on my breathe or on a simple mantra. For me, its all about my pace. I take two paces while inhaling and in my mind, saying the first half of the man tra. Then I follow that with two paces while exhaling my breath and saying the second part of my mantra. I might say in my mind you can, while inhaling and then do this, while exhaling, for instance. When I amreallystressed out, panicking over something, or find myself facing down times of grief or loss, this form of active meditation seems to work best. It gets all that nervous, pent-up energy out of my body in a physically intense way, and I can calm myself down faster than just focusing on my breathing or on a mantra alone. Ill be honest, Ive taken quite a few runs like this while crying, and it helps me get through whatever Im dealing with like nothing else does. What forms of meditation do you practice?Id love to hear how youve cultivated mindfulness into your life, and whether you give any of the above options a try. Tell me Im not alone in being unable to sit through seated meditation, am I? If youre like me on that front, I highly recommend you give active meditation a try bef ore calling it quits on the practice as a whole. This article was originally posted on BossedUp.org.

Jimmy Kimmel Reminds Us to be Vulnerable at Work- The Muse

Jimmy Kimmel Reminds Us to be Vulnerable at Work- The MuseJimmy Kimmel Reminds Us to be Vulnerable at WorkLast night, Jimmy Kimmel recounted the heart-wrenching story of learning his newborn son had a heart condition. With a few jokes and many more tears, he recalled the diagnosis, the ambulance ride to Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles, the hours of waiting while his son was in surgery, and thankfully, the happy ending of the baby being healthy enough to leave the hospital and go home with his family.Watching Kimmel be so open, its hard not to connect with his story. Maybe youve sat in a hospital waiting room, counting the minutes until the doctor comes back with an update on a loved one. Maybe, youre a parent, who remembers agonizing over your babys diaper count, and cant imagine worrying whether their tiny heart was pumping the blood they needed to live. Maybe theres some other personal struggle thats weighed on you, deeply. And if youve been there, you also identify with that mome nt when you have to go back to work. When, with a shredded heart, you have to put on your game face and completely compartmentalize.Except, what if ignoring whats going on in your life isnt the best course of action? Its true Kimmels in a unique position. Standing up and sharing a story every night is what he does. However, theres a lesson here that applies to everyone There are times when you should be vulnerable at work.I know this idea will make some people recoil and think, Ugh, no, not the place. I think they imagine that, as a result of reading this article, their colleagues will start coming in late, crying continuously, asking others to do all of their work, and leaving early- forever. But lets call this what it is a negative, overblown stereotype.Just as the advice to, be yourself in an interview doesnt mean to dress inappropriately, swear, and confess to every career mistake youve ever made being honest about whats going on with you outside of the office doesnt mean you sho uld treat work as an all-day venting session for weeks on end- and you know that. However, you may still be scared that, since youre not a celebrity, being so open could negatively impact your career. You could fear that others will think youre too overwhelmed to do your job, and suddenly, on top of your sadness, you wont be up for exciting projects or promotions. From personal experience, I can say Thats never happened to me. My son Moses passed away at 19 days old in 2014 and its something Ive been very open about, including with my colleagues. No one has questioned my abilities or commitment To the contrary, my co-workers see my resilience. Not just that, but if youre working in a kind and compassionate company, this sort of openness helps everyone in your office. Yes, it helps you because your boss will ask you if your current task load still works, and your co-workers will offer to pitch in. Not to mention, theyll also know that a lack of chattiness doesnt mean you secretly hate them. But on a much more important level, it shows them that they can have the same conversations with you. For example, I work with someone who shared his cancer diagnosis with me, and I in turn, talked about my son. He later told me that it made him feel seen. Neither one of us stopped kicking ass at our jobs, but by being vulnerable, we built trust. Now, our working relationship is closer than ever. If you listen through the whole monologue, youll hear that Kimmel ends by saying he plans to stop crying and continue with the show. As those of us with continuous grief- or any struggle- know, thats the reality. You open your heart, share a piece of yourself, and then you get back to work. While that transition takes some practice, it means you can be yourself at work, and help create a space where others are too. Its not easy, but in the end its much less exhausting than holding everything in.So, if something major is going on in your life, set up a time to speak with your boss, or a mentor at your company, or a close co-worker. They can give you feedback on sharing your story with others at work, and be someone to lean on. And if youre feeling nervous, remember that Jimmy Kimmel shared his story in front of millions last night, and for that, we see him as brave and strong.

Basic Resume Formatting Rules

Basic Resume Formatting Rules Basic Resume Formatting Rules Basic Resume Formatting Rules The overall look and feel of your resume may seem trivial compared to what your resume says, but its not. Visual elements such as font type, size, and style, along with margins and indents, make a difference for first impressions. You can have all of the necessary information in the right order, but if your resume looks like an illegible block of text, you won't make it to the interview phase of your job search. To avoid that kind of mess, make sure you've nailed the most basic style choices that will appeal to the widest possible range of hiring managers. Here are a few guidelines for creating a resume thats readable and inviting: Font: Stick with clean fonts like Verdana, Arial, Trebuchet, or Tahoma. Font Size: Stay within the 9pt to 12pt range (never higher or lower). Play around with the size of the typeface you choose, since 10pt in one type can be bigger than 10pt in another (funny how that works, huh?). Section headings can be a few points larger than the body text so they're easy to find at a glance. Font Style: Use bold or italics to make certain parts of your resume stand out. But whatever you do, make sure you're consistentif you italicize one job title, make sure to italicize them all! Also pay attention to punctuation and line spacing. Margins: Keep the margins between .5 and 1. Sometimes, a slight adjustment of your margins can eliminate the problem of a second page with only a few lines of text on it.. Indents: The most important thing to remember is to keep all indents aligned vertically down the page. If you indent your bullet lists, make sure all bullet lists have the same indent. Pongo's Resume Builder makes formatting your resume a no-brainer. All of our resume (and cover letter) templates are designed to be attractive and readable, so you don't have to worry about sending out a poorly constructed resume. But whether you use or not, be sure your layout and style choices showcase the content of your resume. Don't try to hide a poorly written resume under fancy text and over-the-top graphics, because hiring managers wont be fooled. A resume thats clean, readable, and targeted to the job is the best way to stand out from the crowd.

4 effective ways to triple your salary in four years

4 effective ways to triple your salary in four years 4 effective ways to triple your salary in four years Experts say that visualizing your success can reap many benefits, including actually achieving your  goals  and dreams. I bet you filled your 2017 vision board with goals you are hoping to keep - and maybe even  surpass.  Call this a long shot, but I’m guessing “make more  money”  might  be on that list, whether you’re working towards a promotion, starting a new  side hustle, seeking a better job or even just blindly hoping to figure out the details along the way.So what can you do to help add to your bottom line? Ask yourself  - right now, are  you earning what you’re worth or what you want to be earning? Remember, even if making more money  wasn’t  on your list, a bump in  salary  can only help you accomplish your other goals and resolutions. Here are the steps I took that have resulted in me tripling my salary over the past four years:I switched jobs.According to  Fast Company, you should be changing jobs at least every three years because “workers who stay with a c ompany longer than two years are said to get paid 50% less.”Can you afford to get paid 50% less than what you should be earning? As a woman already fighting for my right to  equal pay, I sure can’t.Millennials aren’t satisfied with spending years in a job that doesn’t help to build skills, advance our careers or help us to earn a higher salary (or at least, one we deserve and could be earning elsewhere).  I don’t suggest throwing caution to the wind and jumping ship every few months, but plan carefully and make good long-term career decisions. After all, this is your future and your livelihood. The negative stigma previously associated with job-hopping is quickly becoming a thing of the past, and those who switch jobs responsibly are actually likely to be labeled as more successful than those that don’t.I leveraged my network. It’s no secret that many people  -  including myself  - dread  networking  events. Between my full-time job, side hustle, being a single mom a nd various classes I take to continue learning, I already have plenty going on (never mind trying to keep the semblance of a social life sprinkled in there). Sometimes, a girl just wants to Netflix and chill to catch up on her latest guilty pleasure. Well, Netflix can (and will) wait. Do you feel comfortable saying that about your career?Yeah, didn’t think so.According to Lou Adler, CEO, best-selling author and  LinkedIn  Influencer,  roughly 85% of all jobs are filled via networking. Many open positions are never even posted or promoted, making it that much more difficult to land that coveted spot at your dream company. Each time I switched jobs, I was fortunate to have been approached either by former colleagues or contacts I made from networking  -  all when I was not actively looking or even thinking about taking on a new role. The ROI from networking can help land you your dream job - isn’t that worth your time and effort?I switched industries.  Not to be Captain Obvious, b ut different industries  -  just like different companies and job titles  -  have different pay scales. As my moves were unplanned, I cannot claim carefully calculated decisions to switch industries, but the industries I switched into tended to have a higher salary for the position(s) I landed. If you want to maximize your paycheck, check out the fastest-growing jobs and industries for 2017  here.I did my research  and utilized my negotiation skills.  Each career move for me resulted in a sizable bump up in pay (and responsibilities, make no mistake). I had to showcase my knowledge and experience, proving to my would-be employer that adding me to their team solved their business pain. I did my research on the  company and the position,  then prepared to discuss salary upon receiving an offer.Glassdoor’s  Know Your Worth tool  helped show up prepared. I researched salary, benefits and industry standards to know where I stacked up  -  and where I had room to negotiate. After you de termine your market value,  be sure to brush up on your negotiation skills/tactics  to maximize how much this can work to your benefit. The most important pieces of advice I can offer to successfully  negotiate  the salary you deserve?Try to avoid directly answering the question “what are you earning now/at your previous job?” Instead, redirect with “In my job search, I am currently seeking a salary in the range of $90-100k.”What you are currently earning or were earning two years ago is of no consequence to what you should/could be earning for a job for which you are qualified  -  and that they want to hire you for! This is simply part of the negotiating process that you must carefully navigate to achieve the desired results. You cannot place a limit on your value, and you should not allow a recruiter or hiring manager to do so for you.Now get to work, ladies, because it’s time for the kickass #girlboss within you to go out and get  exactly  what you’re worth.A version o f this article originally appeared on  CareerContessa.com  and Fairygodboss.- At Fairygodboss, our mission is to help you create the best career for your life. How to Get in Good with Recruiters

How to 'Get in Good' with Recruiters How to 'Get in Good' with Recruiters Don’t burn your first bridge to the job. Recruiters speak up about what job seekers need to do to win their trust.Increasingly, recruiters represent the bridge between you and placement with a company. Build that bridge, and you may find yourself presented with opportunities you never even considered. Burn that bridge, and… Well, we all know what happens when we burn bridges.Ladders collected the advice of recruiters and those who have worked successfully with recruiters to provide recommendations for forging effective, long-term relationships that can lead to promising new professional opportunities.Understand the recruiter’s job and your own qualifications. Not surprisingly, recruiters said it’s important that job candidates understand the role of a recruiter. In short, the recruiter is charged with finding the best person for the position the client is looking to fill. If you are clearly not that person, you are wasting your time and the recruiter’s by trying to suggest otherwise. “It is our job to find and recruit candidates who outshine those available in the conventional job marketplace,” said Jeremy Spring, vice president of business development and a recruiter at Elever. “When introducing yourself for consideration, try and objectively evaluate how your experience aligns with what the recruiter’s client company seeks. If you do not have VP-level experience, no recruiter will consider referring you for a VP-level position.”Know whether you are working with an internal or external recruiter. There are two kinds of recruiters: internal and external. Internal recruiters work with one company; external recruiters work with many. An internal recruiter will have more intimate knowledge about a company’s culture and inner workings, while an external recruiter will have a broader reach. Job candidates should work with the former’s deeper knowledge of the open position and the hiring managers as well as with the latter’s wider field of co ntacts.Be proactive. “An executive recruiter’s success is based on the relationships he or she is able to maintain,” said Elever’s Spring. He recommends spending time researching the recruiting firms operating in your professional space. “Most recruiting firms, large and small, post available roles on their Web sites and provide contact information for the individual consultants working to fill the role,” he said. “An introductory e-mail or phone call will put you on the recruiter’s radar. If your experience is aligned with the open position, a referral might result. If it does not, at least you’ve opened a dialog that might prove useful on other engagements.”Don’t be short-sighted. If you’re contacted by a recruiter and aren’t currently in the market for a new job, don’t be downright dismissive. You never know when you will be looking, and you want to remain in recruiters’ sights. “You may not need a job right now, but that’s not a sure thing at an y point in the near or longer term,” said Roy Cohen, author of “The Wall Street Professional’s Survival Guide” and a career coach. “At the very least, thank them for the call and ask how best to stay in touch.”Be respectful and polite. Recruiters who spoke with Ladders said, almost to a person, that respect and politeness is very important, but they don’t always receive both from job seekers. Be sure to thank recruiters for their time, and follow up with an email to check in. “Politeness is a huge key to cultivating a long-term relationship with a recruiter,” said Nicola Huns, owner of career services site Careerbuzz.com.Be mindful of the recruiter’s time. While it’s important to follow up with recruiters, don’t cross over into pest territory. “One big thing for candidates to do to get on a recruiter’s good side is to respect the recruiter’s time and not take up too much of it,” Huns said. “Recruiters are normally extremely busy people, and candidat es who call multiple times in one day will be pushed to the side because they are too intense and disrespectful…. If a candidate does not hear back from a recruiter, he or she should call them once and leave a message only once emphasizing how interested they are in the position.”Treat your conversations with recruiters like you would any interview.Too many people take their conversations with recruiters too casually, experts said. They added that you should be as prepared for your conversation with a recruiter as you would be for a conversation with a hiring manager. After all, if you don’t get past the recruiter, you won’t get in front of the hiring manager. “Treat your introductory phone conversation like an interview, but without the suit-and-tie conventions,” Elever’s Spring said. “We want to hear about your accomplishments in tangible terms, since that’s how we’ll need to present them to our client company.”Consider constructive criticism. It’s important to remember that the recruiter is working for a client and is paid to know exactly what that client is looking for in a job candidate. If the recruiter provides advice on ways to position your accomplishments to align best with those expectations, it would behoove you to accept the suggestions graciously. “The recruiter knows what will and won’t fly with a particular client,” said Matt Scheihing, president of JMiles Personnel Services.Provide referrals. While recruiters have much to offer job seekers, job seekers have much to offer recruiters. Referrals are recruiters’ bread and butter; passing along the names of qualified peers will definitely improve and extend your relationship with a recruiter, whether you are a fit for a current job or not (and may benefit a job-seeking colleague at the same time). “If there is one thing a recruiter loves, it is getting names of good people they can place,” said Tony Deblauwe, founder of consulting firm HR4Change. “If you aren’ t interested or a fit when a recruiter calls, offer to give them names. Over time, you will get called again, and the gesture of giving referral puts you in front for future opportunities.”

Bad habits you must break to improve your life in 100 days

Bad habits you must break to improve your life in 100 days Bad habits you must break to improve your life in 100 days Habits define us. And nothing sabotages your creativity and productive life quite like bad habits. In the words of Samuel Johnson “The chains of habit are too weak to be felt until they are too strong to be broken.”To live a balanced, productivity, creative and fulfilling life, ridding yourself of your unproductive habits is an important investment. It’s easier to keep going than to take a few minutes to reflect, plan, and to really look at what needs to change for you to create your own version of a productive week, month or year. It’s about time you paid attention to the habits that could be hindering your progress in life and career.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Kill the excuses!Do you ever catch yourself making excuses when things don’t turn out as you had expected? Have you ever tried to explain away why you didn’t, couldn’t, shouldn’t or simply wouldnâ €™t do something?I’m too tired. I don’t have the time. I am not capable. Someone else will do it. It’s too late now. Now is not the right time. I am not talented. I am not ready. I’m too scared. Nobody will help me. What if I fail. I don’t feel motivated. I’d rather do nothing. I don’t have the money … yet! Those are the biggest excuses people make. It’s easy to come up with excuses and justify not getting started. The longer you fill your head with rationalizations and empty excuses, the less time you have to take action.Jordan Belfort said, “The only thing standing between you and your goal is the bullshit story you keep telling yourself as to why you can’t achieve it.”It’s easy to say, “I will start when I have more experience, money, time and resources”. By this time next year, you will have a lot more excuses. It’s a cycle. And once you get caught in the loop, it can be difficult to break free and do something meaningful you care about. Many people are living their entire lives without ever standing up and stepping out. But it’s exciting to witness the rare few who dare themselves and step out of their personal bubbles to make a change. Most of us live with the stubborn illusion that we will always have tomorrow to do today’s work. We consistently hold on to this belief and keep procrastinating until work becomes a heavy burden.Left unchecked, we always default toward a more comfortable path. Your comfortable zone provides a state of mental security. You can understand why it’s so hard to kick your brain out of your comfort zone.Your super connected habitIf you can be reached via smartphone, email, Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn, you’re way too available and all these outlets are possible connections that can distract you from your purpose. In his best-selling book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, Nicholas Carr writes, “The Web provides a convenient and compelling supplement to personal memory - but when we start using the Web as a substitute for personal memory, by bypassing the inner processes of consolidation, we risk emptying our minds of their riches.”Disconnect and watch as your productivity sores.Your smartphone might be the biggest productivity killer of all time. Most people just can’t put the phone away. If your phone is connected online, the temptation to stay updated about almost everything is very high.If you can, put down that phone (or power it off) for a while when in the office and witness the effect that can have on your level of productivity.Multitasking is killing your brainMultitasking keeps your mind full, busy, and always under pressure. Science has proven that only 2% of us can really multitask efficiently. So just give it up already.Stop multi-tasking, seriously stop. Of all the bad habits, multitasking is among the worst and most common. Multi-tasking does not necessarily make you more productive as you may think. You can actually achieve more in less time when you single task and focus on getting one thing done well.It takes about 23 minutes and 15 seconds to fully return to a task after an interruption, according to Gloria Mark, Professor at UC Irvine, in Fast Company. So you may be wasting a lot more time than you think. In his book, The Myth of Multitasking: How “Doing It All” Gets Nothing Done, Crenshaw explains the difference between “background tasking” - like watching TV while exercising - and “switchtasking,” juggling two tasks by refocusing your attention back and forth between them, and losing time and progress in the switch.More is not necessarily better. In fact, in many cases, the quality beats the quantity.Focusing on the things that bring the biggest rewards or achievement is a great strategy.Saying YES to everythingTime is the raw material of productivity and creativity. We are not taught to say “no.” We are taught not to say “no.” “No” is normally considered “rude”. But “y es” makes limits creative and productivity time.Saying “no” means you have time to focus on your own creation, tasks, and projects, rather than responding and reacting to requests.“You can’t let other people set your agenda in life,” says Warren Buffett. How is how Charles Dickens rejected an invitation from a friend:“ ‘It is only half an hour’ - ‘It is only an afternoon’ - ‘It is only an evening,’ people say to me over and over again; but they don’t know that it is impossible to command one’s self sometimes to any stipulated and set disposal of five minutes - or that the mere consciousness of an engagement will sometime worry a whole day … Who ever is devoted to an art must be content to deliver himself wholly up to it, and to find his recompense in it. I am grieved if you suspect me of not wanting to see you, but I can’t help it; I must go in my way whether or no.”Acting on the directives of your inner critic!“Remember, you have been critici zing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.” ?  Louise L. HayYou are not good enough! You can’t do it! Don’t even bother trying! It’s too late for you! Nobody will share it, like it, recommend it or even see it! Don’t waste your time! You have no writing credentials. You’re terrible at grammar, punctuation, and using parentheses. No one wants to read your opinions - everyone has their own opinions to sort through.“Turn down the volume of your negative inner voice and create a nurturing inner voice to take it’s place. When you make a mistake, forgive yourself, learn from it, and move on instead of obsessing about it. Equally important, don’t allow anyone else to dwell on your mistakes or shortcomings or to expect perfection from you.” ?  Beverly EngelPsychological research shows that success and well-being are associated with high self-esteem and that people with lower self-esteem suffer a disproportionate share of emotional and behavioral problems. The truth is …Nobody is perfect enough to begin anything! You will never be ready for anything..ever! I love to write and share. I’m not a professional writer. I have no writing credentials. I am not Stephen King.I have no technique, and I am not trained. But I write anyway. It matters that I show up every day. I can only get better with practice. My inner critic has gotten weaker with time.Aiming for perfectionThe root of procrastination is the fear of not doing a good job. Perfection kills creativity. Don’t fuss over details as you move forward. What matters is that you get something done. The real world doesn’t reward perfectionists. It rewards people who get things done. Give yourself time in your life to wonder what’s possible and to make even the slightest moves in that direction.Done is better than perfect. You will screw up in the process but it’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up for making a mistake or making a wrong choice. It will only lead to self-destructive behavior.Bob Pozen, author of Extreme Productivity: Boost Your Results, Reduce Your Hours, says while perfectionism is a “learned habit,” it can be an “unlearned habit” if you work at it.It’s okay to screw up as long as you are willing to try again. Non-conformists and originals screw up a lot. But they move on, knowing that at some point, the breakthrough will happen. No matter how many mistakes you make, or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying.Creativity flourishes when you don’t seek perfection but focus on getting stuff done. What you do matters, not what you think or say or plan. And doesn’t have to be perfect. The real world rewards those who create stuff and get things done. Give yourself space to think and wonder. And don’t be afraid of what might happen.Creating is the result of thinking like walking. Left foot, problem. Right foot, solution. Repeat until you arrive.Give yourself time in your life to wonder what is possible and to make even the slightest moves in that direction.Delaying the launch of your passion projectYou cannot stay in your comfort zone forever. Career magic happens outside your safe boundary. Until you make that all important decision to take that crucial step, you will feel stuck for a very long time.Don’t just think about it, Act!Action begets outcome. Outcome begets more action. You can only create or build when you make a move. Momentum builds through action. You can’t see the results you expect until you overcome your fear of starting and begin to take the first step at actually creating a new business, starting a new project or building the life you want. The only thing worse than failure is not starting.Failure is not final. There are way too many people out there who want to stay in their comfort zone and take no action but still complain of their current life. Don’t be one of them. A single step gets you closer to your dream care er.Don’t discount the power of action no matter how small.Figure out the best time outside your normal work hours to get something done. You don’t even have to do most things yourself. You could outsource or get someone else involved.Set aside the time for your meaningful project and consider marking it on your calendar so you’ll actually do it. Make time to check in with yourself about your hopes, dreams, and goals. If you are still not sure about your passion project, Chris Guillebeau has insightful ideas to help you find and launch a project you deeply care about. In his book, Born for This: How to Find the Work You Were Meant to Do, Chris writes, “Finding the work you were meant to do is rarely a linear journey. It’s a process of exploring many little twists and turns that lead us to the place we ultimately belong. THE WINNING”Worrying about your weaknessesIt’s easier to play to your strengths. Chances are you are paying too much attention to negative information.Mil lions of people are worried and always thinking about how to get rid of their weaknesses. What if you turn things around and focus on your strengths instead. The bitter truth is, you may never overcome your weaknesses but you could make significant changes to how you live and work if you focus on what you are good at. The key here is that you don’t have to change who you are; you have to become more of who you are.“Focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses. Focus on your character, not your reputation. Focus on your blessings, not your misfortunes,” says Roy T. BennettIn a study by Harvard Business Review, it was noted that while people remember criticism, awareness of faults doesn’t necessarily translate into better performance. It was further discovered that knowing your strengths offers you a better understanding of how to deal with your weaknesses - and helps you gain the confidence you need to address them.InactionDespite the many options the new have as a generation, we are still left with a paradox of inaction. Theodore Roosevelt once said, “It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to have tried to succeed.”On one hand, we instinctively tend to stick with the default: get an education, get good grades and pursue a career society deems “respectful”.Those careers promise financial security devoid of risks. Safe over risk has always been the choice of millions. It’s a safer bet.Nobody likes to rock the boat. We feel safe in our comfort zones, where we can avoid the sting of regret. And yet, at the same time, we regret most of those actions and risks we did not take.Studies consistently show that when we look back on our lives the most common regrets are not the risks we took, but the ones we didn’t.Of the many regrets people describe, regrets of inaction outnumber those of action by nearly two to one. Some of the most common include not being more assertive and failing to seize the moment. When people reflect later in life, it is the t hings they did not do that generate the greatest despair. But you can do something about what you truly want in life now. You don’t have to have many regrets when you can seize the moment today. There are more opportunities to completely reinvent your role in the system than ever before.Stop giving a f*ck“A man is likely to mind his own business when it is worth minding. When it is not, he takes his mind off his own meaningless affairs by minding other people’s business.” -  Eric HofferIt is human nature to want to be liked and accepted, hence the insane pursuit of conformity. But you can make a conscious effort to stop giving a damn; to let yourself free. It’s a skill that needs to be practiced, like any other skill. Once you truly understand how to let go, you will see the world from an entirely different perspective. The world is constantly telling you that everything you are not is what makes you happy. The other persons “great” job, a better car, a new and bigger ho use etc. Giving a f*ck about everything the world wants you to have makes you more miserable about what you are not or don’t have.Don’t focus your life and efforts on chasing a mirage. It causes mental health problems you don’t want. You are probably too busy giving a f*ck about so many things around you that you’ve practically stopped living.Mark Manson writes in his book, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life, “In my life, I have given a fuck about many people and many things. I have also not given a fuck about many people and many things. And like the road not taken, it was the fucks not given that made all the difference.”The key to the good life you really need is giving a damn about what’s important to your growth, career, and total well being. When you stop giving a damn about what people think, your self-confidence will definitely shoot through the roof faster than you can ever imagine. You’ll start to believe in yourself and what you can offer the world, without letting outside influences stop you or sway your decisions. The more you desperately want to be like someone else, the more unworthy you feel. The more you desperately want to be happier, the lonelier you become, despite the awesome people surrounding you.Mental toughness, happiness, and living life to the fullest come from knowing what to care about â€" and most importantly, what not to care about. This article  originally appeared on Medium. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people Bad habits you must break to improve your life in 100 days Habits define us. Have you ever tried to explain away why you didn’t, couldn’t, shouldn’t or simply wouldn’t do something?I’m too tired. In his best-selling book, The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains, Nicholas Carr writes, “The Web provides a convenient and compelling supplement to personal memory - bu t when we start using the Web as a substitute for personal memory, by bypassing the inner processes of consolidation, we risk emptying our minds of their riches.”Disconnect and watch as your productivity sores.Your smartphone might be the biggest productivity killer of all time. But “yesâ € makes limits creative and productivity time.Saying “no” means you have time to focus on your own creation, tasks, and projects, rather than responding and reacting to requests.“You can’t let other people set your agenda in life,” says Warren Buffett. I am grieved if you suspect me of not wanting to see you, but I can’t help it; I must go in my way whether or no.”Acting on the directives of your inner critic!“Remember, you have been criticizin g yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. It wil l only lead to self-destructive behavior.Bob Pozen, author of Extreme Productivity: Boost Your Results, Reduce Your Hours, says while perfectionism is a “learned habit,” it can be an “unlearned habit” if you work at it.It’s okay to screw up as long as you are willing to try again. A single step gets you closer to your dream career. Don’t discount the power of action no matter how small.Figure out the best time outside your normal work hours to get something done. Chances are you are paying too much attention to negative information.Millio ns of people are worried and always thinking about how to get rid of their weaknesses. When people reflect later in life, it is the thin gs they did not do that generate the greatest despair. The other persons “great” job, a better car, a new and bigger house etc. 3 Tips for Writing to a Global Audience

3 Tips for Writing to a Global Audience 3 Tips for Writing to a Global Audience Even though you are probably writing more than ever beforeif you were to add up instant messages, texts, emails, and social mediawriting a formal report on your research or business projects requires a different discipline. When you are writing to a global audience, which is becoming more common, the task becomes even more complex. The number one rule of writing is always the same, however: Know your audience and write to them. Here are three things engineers should keep in mind when they are writing to a global business or professional audience: 1) Focus on what your readers have in common People across the globe have vastly different cultures and ways of life. If you pay too much attention to those differences, though, you may be paralyzed when you try to communicate. David Brousell is a long-time business writer and editor who helped launch a new online media brand with a global scope called Manufacturing Executive, manufacturing-executive.com. His international audience includes engineers across all disciplines in manufacturing and the top executives that employ them. Brousell recommends using concepts and terms that are understood all over the world. No matter where people are, they understand the language of business, he said. Talk about profit and loss, profit margin, time to market, and return on investment. If you are writing to an audience of engineers only, you can use basic concepts that are widely taught in engineering schools around the world, he added. 2) Assume your audience is smart and well educated Like it or not, we all hold preconceived notions of people in other countries. Put them aside. If someone has received a professional education in another country or is doing business internationally, that person is likely to have above-average intelligence. Even if your readers speak English with a heavy accent, you cant assume they dont understand the written language. Make sure you write as clearly and succinctly as possible, and avoid talking down to international readers. 3) Take time to refresh your writing skills Internet and mobile communication doesnt require much formality. Most people dont expect you to spend a lot of time composing an IM, text or email; the grammar and spelling standards are loose and many abbreviations are commonly understood. Even if you are writing to those same people, however, they will expect a different standard in a written report. If you dont write formal reports or memos often, dont be surprised if youve become rusty. In fact, make a plan to consult with dictionaries, online grammar sites, old writing handbooks, or your most literate friends. Ideally, create a schedule so that you can complete a draft of your report a few days before it is due. Ask someone else to read it, not only for grammar and spelling but also to make sure you have gotten across your key concepts. Especially with an international audience, it is important to take the time to make sure your communication is clear. Marie Griffin is an independent writer. People across the globe have vastly different cultures and ways of life. If you pay too much attention to those differences, though, you may be paralyzed when you try to communicate.

Know the Major Differences between Private- and Public-Sector Companies

Know the Major Differences between Private- and Public-Sector Companies Know the Major Differences between Private- and Public-Sector Companies If you are looking for employment but are not sure whether you seek to work within the public or private sector, then the following guide will provide you with some useful tips and advice on the different types of jobs available within each sector: Examples of public-sector employment areas: Health and care Teaching Emergency services Armed forces Civil service City councils There are a number of advantages to working in the public sector, including job stability and the  various high-quality benefits packages available. These include excellent retirement benefits and  favorable insurance policies. Public employees typically enjoy better job security than private employees, except during periods of major budget cuts. Also, many government positions are permanent appointments once a probationary period has been met. After this period has past, it is very unlikely for an employee to be laid off. Furthermore, once you have been granted employment within the public sector, it is relatively easy to move from one public sector position to another whilst still retaining the same benefits, holiday entitlements, and sick pay as you did in your previous role. In general, government workers also tend to earn better compensation compared to their private-sector counterparts; however, certain private-sector occupations can earn far more than the average public-employee salary. Examples of private-sector employment areas: Financial services Law firms Estate agents Newspapers or magazines Veterinarians Aviation Hospitality The benefits of working in the private sector traditionally outweigh the benefits of working in the public sector. Private sector employment allows greater fluidity if moving from one job to another. Further still, for those individuals remaining within the same company, it is far easier to quickly move up within a company, as these decisions are made within the company rather than being based on central rules and regulations as stipulated by the government. In addition to the above, individuals employed within the public sector will find a greater degree of flexibility when obtaining a pay rise, with companies in the position to offer regular pay rises if an employee sufficiently fulfills his or her obligations.  There is also greater variety in potential job descriptions within the private sector, given that public employers have a set number of roles to play in society. However, a more competitive marketplace can mean longer hours and more demanding work environments, compared to the more stable environment found in the public sphere. Public agencies are not subject to the market pressures present in the private sector. Before moving from a job in one sector to a position in the  other, it is important to explore the differences between these career paths, paying particular attention to  available benefits, job security, and workplace environment.

Questions to Ask a Recruiter

Questions to Ask a Recruiter Questions to Ask a Recruiter Recruiters provide vital links between employers and prospective workers. Some job candidates seek out their services directly. Others discover after submitting an application that the hunt is being conducted by a recruiter on behalf of a company. Don’t be surprised if you even encounter a recruiter when you’re not looking for a job- some make “cold calls” to people they’ve identified as a good possible fit for an open position. Posing thoughtful questions to recruiters helps candidates truly get a handle on what certain employment opportunities are all about. But what should you ask? Here are some questions to ask a recruiter that can help you get the most out of your conversation: Can you tell me more about the job? Recruiters can provide greater detail than what you may have already learned through a job posting, network connection, or website, so encourage them to reveal everything they know. After you’ve established some basics, probe more directly into the nature of the specific position and the culture of the employer. You’ll gain insight about daily life and company values, which can be critical when you’re trying to decide whether the opportunity is worth pursuing. “Its good when candidates ask relevant questions about the inner workings of the role, not just about information they can find online,” says Matt Cholerton, human resources leader and founder of Hito Labs. He recommends asking questions such as: What, specifically, are some projects Ill work on when I start? If Im successful, what will I have done in six months? In one year? Who will I work with in this role? Can you tell me what is unique about this company’s culture? How many females, or people of diversity, are on the executive team? How about in the department in which I’ll be working? Why did the last person in this job leave? Are you coming into a newly created role? Did your predecessor get a promotion? Was someone fired? Knowing the situation you might be walking into can be telling. How long has the job been open? The recruiter’s answer can be a red flag. A position that’s been open for quite some time may signal that other candidates found reason to pass it up, and maybe you should be on guard. Or it might mean you’ll be dealing with a particularly fussy or indecisive hiring manager. If the job just opened, expect the hiring process to take some time since the employer likely will be looking at a few candidates before getting serious about offers. When a Recruiter Makes Unsolicited Contact Hearing from a recruiter when you aren’t actively job hunting can take you by surprise and may make you leery. However, especially in this age of LinkedIn, recruiters have plenty of ways to learn about and connect with people who appear promising. Get some basic information from the get-go such as: Where did you obtain my name and contact information? What is the name of your firm, and where is it located? What other roles have you filled recently? Where is the job itself located, and does it offer flexible arrangements? (No sense continuing on if you’re not willing to relocate and they’re not interested in telecommuters.) If you decide the opportunity might be worth further investigation, start tailoring questions more directly to the actual position. Pose the questions mentioned earlier as you see applicable. Cholerton also suggests asking: Why do you think Im a good fit for this role? What has been lacking in candidates so far? What is the salary the company said it can pay for this role? And be sure to get the person’s full name, title, and contact info. After you perform your own research on both the recruiter and the prospective employer, you’re bound to have many more questions! Know someone looking for a job? Refer a friend to with this link- you’ll get a month free service and they’ll get 30% off!
